In a significant turn of events, former Al Qaeda member, Al-Sharaa, has emerged as a key figure following the overthrow of Syrian dictator Bashar Assad late last year. Earlier in February, Brussels had lifted certain restrictions concerning energy, transport, and banking; however, the deadline for a comprehensive review of these sanctions is looming in June. Macron emphasized the necessity of addressing the hesitations expressed by several allied nations regarding the future of Syria and the effectiveness of Al-Sharaa’s leadership.

“Several allied nations have hesitations, we will work toward dispelling those doubts,” Macron stated, articulating the delicate balance of fostering stability while navigating the complex political landscape in Syria.

In a further comment, Al-Sharaa asserted that the sanctions imposed on Damascus were targeted specifically at Assad’s regime, arguing that “nothing justified maintaining them.” His stance aims to reinforce the push towards normalizing relations and rebuilding the country, which has been ravaged by years of civil war.
