Viewers tuning into the popular BBC game show Blankety Blank on Saturday night were met with a shocking revelation that left many in disbelief: the winning contestant, Nathanael Hill, had passed away months before the episode was aired. Nathanael, a 39-year-old RAF veteran hailing from Liverpool, not only showcased his wit and charm during the episode but also won the prestigious main prize.

The episode featured a star-studded lineup of celebrity panellists, including the likes of Rob Beckett, Lucy Beaumont, Jack Dee, Omid Djalili, Dame Kelly Holmes, and Steph McGovern. However, the joyous celebration of his victory turned somber when, following the credits, a poignant memorial message appeared on-screen. The tribute included a touching image of Hill on horseback, accompanied by the heartfelt caption: “Nathanael Hill 1985 – 2025.” This message revealed that Hill had tragically passed away in April, just a few months after filming the episode.

The tribute did not disclose the specific cause of his death, leaving viewers and fans to grapple with their confusion and sorrow. Hill had a distinguished military career, serving as an armour officer in the Royal Air Force. His service included an impressive six tours in Iraq and four in Afghanistan, as well as his involvement in the pivotal Operation Red Flag. During one of his deployments in south-central Asia, Hill endured a serious injury from shrapnel caused by a roadside bomb, which ultimately led to his medical discharge from the forces.

In the years following his military career, Hill faced considerable health challenges. Four years after leaving the armed forces, he received a diagnosis of late-onset type 1 diabetes. Compounding his health issues, during the pandemic, doctors identified a blood clot in his leg, which resulted in him suffering from sepsis on three separate occasions.

In a statement, Hill’s rugby club expressed profound grief, noting, “More than his achievements in the game, Nate will be remembered for his kindness, sense of humour, and the unwavering support he showed to teammates, new players, and friends alike. His loss will be felt deeply across the club and far beyond.” They praised his contributions, stating, “Nate brought skill, heart, and a contagious enthusiasm to everything he did. His commitment to inclusive rugby and to our community helped shape the club into what it is today.”

Prior to his passing, Hill was actively training for triathlons and had ambitious goals of fundraising to represent Team GB at the upcoming 2028 Los Angeles Paralympics. During his appearance on Blankety Blank, he humorously expressed his desire for a running blade to accommodate his prosthetic leg, to which the show's host, Bradley Walsh, humorously rebutted, “I’m not sure that’s in Blankety Blank’s remit to give you a running blade. We can give you a toaster or a kettle?” Nevertheless, Hill left the show with the coveted Blankety Blank cheque book and pen trophy.

Since the broadcast, social media has been flooded with tributes and messages of condolences from viewers who expressed their shock and sadness upon learning of Hill’s untimely death. One viewer poignantly stated, “Who knew you could get sad at the end of an episode of Blankety Blank? RIP Nathanael,” while another echoed, “RIP Nathanael. Fly high.” These heartfelt responses reflect not only the impact Nathanael had on those around him but also the lasting legacy he leaves behind.
