In an innovative development for home security, Yale has unveiled its latest product, the Yale Assure Lock 2 Touch with Z-Wave, priced at $279.99. This new smart lock integrates seamlessly with ADTs Plus security system, allowing users to unlock their doors and disarm their security systems simultaneously via fingerprint recognition. This advanced feature represents a significant leap forward from the now-discontinued Nest Secure system, which previously enabled users to achieve similar functionality using a single access code.

The ADT Plus system, which made its debut last year, serves as a modern substitute for Nest Secure. Google made a substantial $450 million investment in ADT prior to discontinuing its own security offerings, underscoring the growing importance of integrated home security solutions. As the market evolves, Yale has stepped up by launching a new lock designed specifically for compatibility with Googles smart home ecosystem, replacing the older Nest X Yale model. While Yale offers a variety of locks that work with ADT systems, this Z-Wave version stands out as the first to incorporate fingerprint access technology.

A key feature of the new Yale Assure Lock 2 Touch is its compatibility with the Z-Wave smart home protocol. This technology enables the lock to communicate effectively with ADTs home security base using the newly introduced User Credential Command Class. This innovative command class provides a more secure mechanism for managing user passwords and PIN codes across Z-Wave networks. Z-Wave operates on a mesh-based wireless communication protocol, utilizing frequencies between 800-900 MHz, and does require a dedicated hub for connectivity.

According to ADT representatives, while the Z-Wave 800 Series lock can function independently with any compatible Z-Wave system, the unique feature of disarming the security system through the lock remains exclusive to the ADT Plus platform for the time being. Notably, ADT is pioneering the adoption of the Command Class standard within the security industry, leaving the door open for future compatibility with other security systems should they choose to adopt this standard.

Interestingly, the Yale Assure Lock 2 Touch is only the second Z-Wave-compatible lock to offer fingerprint access, following the Ultraloq launch of a similar product a few years ago. However, the Ultraloq model only provides door unlocking capabilities, whereas Yales new lock uniquely allows for the integration of security system control via fingerprint authentication.

In terms of functionality, the Yale Assure Lock 2 Touch is a Z-Wave adaptation of the previously established Yale Assure Lock 2 Touch, which features Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity along with fingerprint access. Users will appreciate that, in addition to fingerprint recognition, the new lock can also be operated through a traditional keypad or even a conventional key, providing multiple access methods to accommodate various user preferences.

As with many of Yales smart locks, this Z-Wave model utilizes a modular design for connectivity; however, it is worth noting that the swappable module is not available as a separate purchase, which means consumers cannot retro-fit it into existing Yale locks.

Furthermore, the new fingerprint-enabled lock is compatible with ADT Pluss Trusted Neighbors feature, which requires the ADT professional monitoring plan starting at $24.99 per month. This feature facilitates automated access for authorized individuals when homeowners are away, allowing the system to disarm and unlock the door by recognizing their faces through Google Nest security cameras. The introduction of the fingerprint lock enhances this feature, allowing authorized users to disarm the security system and gain access to the home via their fingerprint.
