If youve recently managed to get your hands on a Nintendo Switch 2, theres some important information you should be aware of, especially if youre a longtime Nintendo enthusiast. You may have an old Pro controller from the last generation lying around, with thumbsticks that are worn down to the point where they resemble slick racing tires. The good news is that this old controller will indeed work with your brand-new Switch 2, albeit with some limitations.

As highlighted by Matt Swider, the owner of the deals blog The Shortcut, the compatibility of older Nintendo Switch Pro controllers with the Switch 2 comes with a few caveats. Nintendo has confirmed that while these older controllers can connect wirelessly to the new console, they wont be fully compatible across all functionalities. According to Nintendo, "These accessories can be used by connecting wirelessly to Nintendo Switch 2. They can be charged by connecting them to the Nintendo Switch 2 dock via a USB cable." This means that while your classic controller can still be used to play games, it may not provide the seamless experience youd hope for.

One significant drawback is that you cannot exit sleep mode on the Switch 2 using the HOME button found on the older Pro controllers. Yes, thats correct; you will need to physically get up from your comfortable spot on the couch to press the on/off button on the console itself. In a modern age where convenience is key, this limitation can be quite frustrating. It feels as if youre being asked to trade in your car for a horse and greet your friends with archaic terms like 'kind sir' instead of simply clicking a button.

For those who prioritize the comfort of waking their console with a button, this indeed poses a challenge. If you want to use the HOME button functionality to wake the Switch 2, youll need to invest in the new Switch 2-specific Pro controller, which retails for $85. This added expense can be quite unappealing, particularly when considering that the console itself costs $450 and many games range between $80 to $90.

However, purchasing the new Pro controller does come with its own advantages. While it may not represent a revolutionary shift compared to its predecessor, it features some enhancements that could make it worthwhile. One of the most notable upgrades is the inclusion of Hall Effect joysticks. Unlike traditional joysticks that rely on physical contact with the controllers internal hardware, Hall Effect joysticks utilize magnetic fields to create separation. This innovation significantly reduces wear and tear, thereby extending the lifespan of your controller considerably.

As a gamer who frequently plays Super Smash Bros., I understand the value of durability in a controller, especially if it means sacrificing an extra $80 for something that will last longer. In addition to Hall Effect joysticks, the new Pro controllers also offer faster charging capabilities. This means less time waiting for your controller to charge up after you inevitably forget to plug it in after your last gaming session.

While its tempting to find a silver lining in the situation, its hard to ignore the fact that Nintendo appears to be raising prices across the board. Games are becoming more expensive, hardware costs are climbing, and even accessories are slightly pricier. This trend raises concerns among fans, especially in light of ongoing tariff discussions and economic factors influencing the gaming industry.

Ultimately, while we can appreciate the innovations such as Hall Effect joysticks, it's clear that Nintendo is asking its fans to invest more not only in new hardware but in the entire ecosystem of gaming. As we navigate these changes, were left with the challenge of balancing our enthusiasm for new technology with our wallets.
