Specialists at CarShop have highlighted the benefits of using the eco mode found in most modern vehicles, which helps save on petrol. The inclusion of an "eco" or "economy" mode in the majority of new cars aims to decrease the strain on essential engine components, thereby improving fuel economy. This revelation comes as drivers are experiencing a spike in vehicle running costs, with petrol and diesel prices soaring recently. Typically situated on the car's dashboard or within the infotainment system's settings, the eco mode function can make a notable difference in fuel consumption. CarShop experts explain: "Most modern cars are fitted with an 'eco mode' that reduces throttle responsiveness and engine power output, in turn using less fuel." They add that for vehicles with automatic transmissions, engaging this mode can also lead to earlier gear changes, which optimise efficiency depending on the engine's load – potentially cutting your fuel use by approximately five percent, reports the Mirror. Eco mode slows down certain aspects of a car's performance to boost fuel efficiency without significantly affecting speed. Drivers will notice less sensitivity during acceleration, leading to a more restrained response. According to Progressive's motoring enthusiasts, Eco mode is ideal for relaxed driving conditions. They underscore that this feature is ideal for drivers who typically travel at speeds under 45mph, suggesting it's well-suited to leisurely commutes and city driving. But experts urge caution with the use of this function during certain situations, such as blending into fast-moving traffic or when on complex journeys. The renowned comparison site for garage service costs, BookMyGarage, pointed out that engaging economy mode can "enhance vehicle's fuel efficiency". They even advised motorists to proactively turn off electric appliances that aren't in use, including the car’s air conditioner, which is notorious for guzzling petrol.
